Self-Esteem
Self-esteem refers to the feelings we have towards ourselves, both good and bad. When our self-esteem is high, we feel love, confidence and compassion, while low self-esteem tends to accompany feelings of low-worth, shame and doubt.
Everybody’s self-esteem fluctuates depending on what is happening around them, but we all tend to have a base level that reflects what we actually believe about ourselves. Many of these beliefs begin in childhood and take the form of assumptions that often go un-challenged, such as:
- I am unlovable
- I am stupid
- People wouldn’t accept me if they knew the real me
- I don’t deserve to be happy
When we work on your self-esteem, we will often begin by identifying the negative beliefs that you have about yourself, working out where they come from, and then shining a light on them to see how true they actually are. None of us are perfect but I'm willing to bet that the negative thoughts you have about yourself don't bear a lot of resemblance to how others see you, or to the potential you have within you.
Over time, we can start to replace the negative assumptions with more positive ones, such as:
- I am lovable
- I deserve to have my needs met
- I can accept myself with all my different parts
- It's fine and normal to make mistakes
Everyone deserves to feel that they have worth and I believe that we all have it within us to love ourselves. If you are struggling with issues of low self-worth, please do reach out and let's start making a change.
